Cancelled on the App Store — Why Do I Still Have Access?

You cancelled your subscription in the App Store.

You expected access to stop immediately.

But the service still shows “Active.”

Premium features are still unlocked.

It looks like the cancellation didn’t work.

Most of the time, the cancellation worked — your access is simply valid until the end of the current billing period.

What App Store “Cancel” Actually Does

  • It stops the next renewal charge
  • It does not remove access instantly
  • You keep access until the subscription end date
  • The plan usually changes to “Expires on [date]”

Cancellation = no future billing, not “remove access now.”

Why the Service Still Looks Active

  • The service hasn’t refreshed your subscription status yet
  • You’re logged into a different account than the paying Apple ID
  • The app shows cached “Active” status until the next sync
  • Your subscription is part of Family Sharing (some services handle this differently)

Even after cancellation, access can appear active until the service confirms the expiry.

How to Confirm the Cancellation Is Real

  • Open iPhone Settings → Apple ID → Subscriptions
  • Check the subscription end date (expiration/renewal date)
  • Look for “Expires” or “Renews” status
  • Verify you cancelled the correct subscription and the correct Apple ID

If you see an end date, the cancellation is already in effect.

When You Should Worry

  • The App Store still shows “Renews” and a future charge date
  • You have multiple subscriptions for the same service
  • You cancelled inside the app but not in Apple Subscriptions

If “Renews” remains, cancel again in Apple Subscriptions immediately.

If You Want Access to Stop Right Now

  • Log out and log back in to refresh account status
  • Force-close the app and reopen
  • Use “Restore Purchases” (if available)
  • Contact support and request account deactivation after expiry

For most services, access ends automatically on the expiration date — not the cancellation date.
